Generating Revenue from a blog or site (My Experience of SEO, blogging & ad services)

This post is the extract of what I did as a beginner to make my blog running
fluently and making good revenue out of it. Following are some easy and smart
ways that can expedite the things. Below is my experience in simple words which
can be helpful to you as a beginner.

1) Ready with some idea on what type of content you are going to
expose.

Ready to create some new and a quality one, quite frequently
The very first step is to come out with some creative & unique idea. Idea
here directly refers your content which is going to engage users to make
traffic. The first important tip for the SEO is to get involved in a small
competition rather than a large one. Small competition always comes
with a unique idea. A unique type of content will invite lesser number of
related links via search engine if your site is being crawled or searched
thereby increasing the chances of being on the top.

2) Identify a hosting platform

Now it’s the time to decide where to start a free blog. Two of the most
popular now a days are Blogger and wordpress. People used to spend a
lot of time in deciding to go for either of them. I had prefer blogger but
both has its own set of pros & cons. I found Wordpress as more user
friendly and suits to the people who are not computer savvy. But if we
talk about SEO, blogger dominates. Since Blogger is a Google product,
they pretty much have search engine optimization covered. Doing some
basic settings to your blog can expose your blog to the search engine
crawler.

3) Use proper Meta tags for your blog

Meta tags are the HTML tags than contain the keywords of your choice
through which your blog or site has to be searched using search engines.
Meta tags provide the information about your web content to search
engines. So it is required to have proper description and keywords
pertaining to the content you have exposed, thereby increasing the chances of your site being crawled. Blogger provides a good interface to
place Meta tags. Go to SettingsSearch preferences under the
dashboard of your blog.

4) Check Robots.txt of your web directory

Robots.txt is the robot file which is placed in the web directory to
instruct a web crawler or search engine. Using Robots.txt you can make
a search engine stop following some or all pages on your blog or site. If
you are using Blogger, your Robots.txt is disabled by default. You must
have a proper understanding of commands it accepts, as it can make
your blog being ignored by search engines. If you are new, it’s better not
to enable it. See SettingsSearch preferences under the dashboard of
your blog.

5) Sharing your blog on social media

The very important step is to promote your blog on social media like
Facebook, Twitter, Google plus etc. The only thing you need is to make
an account on these sites and post about your blog and its content
there. The best approach according to me is to create a Facebook page
and to promote it. Having a Facebook page means having a potential
audience because you are not going to lose with time. I would prefer to
pay Google Adwords (the paid advertisement service by Google) to
promote my Facebook page rather than promoting my blog or site itself.
It is better to invest your money in a good proportion to both.
You can also use paid Facebook paid promotions to attract more
audience. Besides this, you can join several groups on Facebook that are
relevant to your blog and post about your blog there.

6) Post quite frequently

Posting on a regular basis is as important as coming up with quality
content. To keep the readers engaged, you need to post quite frequently. Posting once in a week or twice in a month can reduce the
traffic straightaway. It is the responsibility of the content of the posts to
engage the users. Try to allow readers to add comments so that they can
get engaged in a discussion. Keep some free stuff to download from
your site and play contests on the site.

7) Sharing your site with some public Directories

Submit your blog link to the web directories like DMOZ, Bloggers
Directory etc to make your appearance public. Search for some popular
& free web directories and then use them. Also you can engage yourself
on forums of other popular sites that are relevant to your blog and
comment about your blog and posts there.

8) Submit your site link and sitemap to Google

It’s important to get registered with the top search engines. Google
allows the users to add their URLs to its directory. A sitemap is the Meta
data of your site. It will tell your users, how is the structure of your site.
Submit your sitemap to Google to increase its visibility.

9) Publish Ads on the blog

Now after having done with the SEO and a little promotion of your site,
it’s time to get some code from a publisher which can display ads on
your blog. The code is mostly in Javascript which pulls ads at several
times to be displayed along with the content on your blog. Google
Adsense is the leader in providing ad units worldwide but it’s not easy to
get an account over a night from Adsense. Earlier you need to wait for
few days after submitting your request but now, it’s even more difficult.
Adsense has placed a restriction of 6 months of owning a site to be
eligible to get an approval. If you have just launches a blog or site, you
have to make it running for 6 months.Adsense is the most popular for its good revenue generating ad units
but rather waiting for 6 months, why should not we go for some
alternatives. For the time being I prefer to have ad units from Infolinks &
Chitika. Although the ad units from Infolinks & Chitika are not contextual
like Adsense but their Inline text ad units are doing well in the present
day scenario.
_____________________________________________________

So guys you also can generate good revenue out of these. Coming out
with a good design, quality content and your skills of generating traffic
can make the things working out. Once you are ready to have ad units
from Adsense, you can use it along with the ad units from other
publishers as it is.
